Bachelor-/Masterarbeit: Consequences of taxonomic resolution of bacterial gen-sequences on phytoplankton-bacteria interactions

The English Channel is one of only a few places worldwide where extensive long-term data of different parameters exist (e.g. nutrients, phytoplankton, zooplankton, bacteria). Within a cooperation with the Plymouth Marine Laboratory, the group of Prof. Ferdi Hellweger aims to unravel fundamental questions of phytoplankton/bacteria interactions in the English Channel (which phytoplankton interacts with which bacterium and why?) by application of the mechanistic model FluxNet. The Bachelor student will analyze distributions and abundances of bacterial gen-sequences on an existing data set from the English Channel. The sequence data are given as exact sequence variants (ESVs), which is a taxonomic resolution higher than species. By merging or separation of similar ESVs, the student will target the following questions with FluxNet:

-       Do sub-populations of bacterial species exist in the English Channel?

-       Can these sub-populations be assigned to eco-types?

-       Does the resolution up to ESVs (exact sequence variants) add valuable information to the model output?

The student should be familiar with Excel, other necessary skills will be taught during the project. If you are interested in this topic please contact Falk Eigemann:

The student is very welcome to add own ideas or suggestions to the project.
