Within the project section A, different techniques for sampling, sample preparation, and analytical detection of microplastics will be advanced. This will already involve various real samples from water bodies and sediments of selected study areas, in order to identify relevant sources in the urban water cycle. The findings, in combination with those from project section B which focuses on the biological effects on humans and aquatic organisms, will provide the basis for the assessment of microplastic pollutions in fresh waters. Technische Universität Berlin will coordinate the project and the associated analyses.

Several interdisciplinary subjects will involve different sub-projects, promoting an intense linkage by internal cooperations and continuous comparisons of methods and findings.
