Project objectives

The objective of the joint research project MiWa is to carry out a first replicable and comprehensive assessment of the problem “microplastics in the anthropogenically influenced water cycle”, addressing the implications of the legal requirements (German directives on wastewater, surface water, groundwater, and drinking water). The assessment will, for the first time, be based on advanced and comparatively applied analytical methods, therefore providing valid data on microplastics in the fresh water system. It will furthermore comprise new findings on potential biological effects.

The assessment will provide the basis for meaningful legislative requisitions, and the planning, testing, validation, and medium-term implementation of measures aiming at the avoidance, minimization, and emission control at point sources, and extending to active water body protection and safe drinking water supply. Simple, affordable, and harmonized analytical methods are important prerequisites for the enforcement of measures, material balances, or comprehensive data collection. Therefore, it is mandatory that the techniques developed in the joint project are practically viable.
